WHY MELA?
After traveling the country and covering some of the biggest sporting events we realized that often times we were the only African Americans journalist covering these events. Our voices are not being heard and our stories are not being told. We decided something needed to be done.
The Main Event Leadership Academy or MELA was created to teach our youth how to use social journalism to become leaders in their communities and that sharing their stories and shedding light on issues that concern them they can have a profound impact on their lives and communities.
MELA is an immersive program where we teach youth how to use the tools that they have at their disposal to create impactful media projects on various platforms that will help to educate and transform their communities.
Accessible Tools
Many of our students don’t have the resources to purchase expensive equipment to produce content. That’s why we focus on using free software and hardware they already have, such as cellphones.
Creating the Leaders of Tomorrow
MELA seeks to create strong leaders by utilizing the power of their creativity, developing their sense of empowerment, increasing their understanding of the community and encouraging their participation in community affairs.
